Trucking company success through happy, long-time team members

Allied Moving Trucks - Quincy IL Moving Company

Many things have changed over the years at Quincy Storage & Transfer Company, but a couple of things have remained constant — the family values and amazing team. In fact, team member David Dix has been a truck driver at Quincy Storage & Transfer for more than 30 years. The company has grown by leaps and bounds since David started at the 2nd and Jersey location, and today the expanded company offers state-of-the-art facilities, trucks, and much more.

David received his One Mission Mile Award in trucking and is well on his way to 1.8 million miles. With no accidents on his record, David has also received the Allied 30 Year Safe Driving Award. He attributes this recognition to doing what he loves, saying, “it kinda gets in your blood.”

“It kinda gets in your blood,” David Dix said.

His favorite things about being a CDL driver for Quincy Storage include having time to raise his two kids over the years, the typically 2-day drives that help him avoid long, monotonous hours, and not seeing the same stuff day in and day out. Each trip is a new experience for David. Quincy Storage is family-oriented and family-focused. Members of management understand when you need to work your schedule around family events and milestones. David applauds the excellent bosses at Quincy Storage, who treat others with respect and live by their open-door policy. He also says you never have to worry about being paid, and that says a lot in the transportation industry.

David has been all over the Midwest and as far away as California on his jobs. Although most routes take only 2-days, he says the longer trips have been fun and filled with new sights and sounds. When far away from home, he’s had plenty of time to explore and take time for himself. Hauls have included everything from complete homes to company products. Some of his favorite jobs have been hauling TV/Radio Transmitters when Quincy Storage has worked with Harris Corporation.

Quincy Storage continues to grow, and David encourages CDL drivers to apply for open positions. The best thing about hiring more truck drivers is that each driver can be more selective in the routes they can take. If you’re new to CDL, David says you can make a good living at driving. It just all depends on you and the commitment you’re willing to make. Bob Casburn and other bosses will respect you as long as you’re doing what you’re supposed to be doing. Better yet, Quincy Storage is willing to train new drivers!

The Quincy Storage team is full of opportunity and fun. If you’re interested in joining David Dix and the rest of the team as a CDL driver, contact Bob at rcasburn@quincystg.com today!

Safe storage in high temps

Quincy Storage Mini Storage Facility - Quincy IL

Spring and summer months make for great transition times. If you’re moving or getting organized, these are the seasons for an optimal move. But wait … before you take action, take in these thoughts from Quincy Storage & Transfer Company on packing and storing items in high heat.

How hot is it inside my storage unit?

Metal doors, concrete, and an absence of trees in the area can cause your unit to get toasty fast on a hot summer day. It’s only a matter of time before outdoor temperatures hit the 90s or higher. The inside of a non-climate-controlled storage unit can routinely hit 30 degrees above those outdoor temps (or higher).

Food items (even non-perishable items) can go bad and cause issues in storage.

Packaging can be sensitive to high temperatures and leave even non-perishable food items vulnerable to spillage and unwanted critters. Insects, rodents, mold, and more can move in quickly with the temperature rising and falling … then factor in humidity. Play it safe and don’t pack it!

It’s ok to pack the toys and basic gadgets, but take the batteries out first.

While we wouldn’t store a laptop because of the risk for damage, we would store baby toys and other low-end gadgets that require batteries. Batteries exposed to heat can bulge, melt, expand, contract, and even damage your devices. In a worst-case scenario, your whole storage unit could go up in flames! Our suggestion is to take the batteries out and just put in fresh ones when you unpack.

Flammable, hazardous, or toxic materials are not meant to be stored in hot places.

Hazardous materials cover a broad spectrum and might include grease, motor oil, fertilizer, paint, and more. Heat, oxygen, and an ignition source are a recipe for a fire in your storage unit … don’t add fuel to that equation. In addition to that, remember that packaging can fail in high temperatures. Your substance could leak, spreading over your belongings and leaving damage everywhere.

These are just a few of the more notable storage no-nos. Quincy Storage & Transfer has one of the area’s largest mini storage complexes and we’re here to help you. Call us with your questions, or set up an appointment to see a storage unit today!

Prepare for a move and prevent broken glass

Moving Tips - Quincy IL Moving Company

We all know someone who has lost a cherished glass item in a move. By lost, we mean lost forever after is was broken. We know that is a sad day. Not only are you under stress from moving, but then all you can think about is grandma’s cookie plate or your mother’s platter going in the dumpster.

It’s our job here at Quincy Storage & Transfer Company, Inc. to provide packing and moving services, but we’ve also got the right tips to help you right now.

Preparation is key

It is our belief that a rushed move is a perilous one. Start your planning well in advance. We recommend breaking down your belongings in a list by room so that you know just how many boxes and how much packing materials are needed.

Quality tools are essential

Don’t scrimp when it comes to boxes and packing materials. You might be tempted to get free boxes from friends or area businesses, but beware. Boxes that have already been used could be at risk for collapse or be frayed from taping them closed too many times. If boxes have already been sitting somewhere in damp conditions, they could provide a damaging environment for your belongings as well. Wide packing tape, fresh packing paper, bubble wrap, and sturdy boxes will make your job a lot easier!

Finally, the packing can begin

When you’ve got your materials all lined up, it’s time to start packing. Here are several easy to follow tips to reduce breakage.

Plates are best packed vertically and wrapped individually in bubble wrap. Line the top and bottom of the box with wadded up packing paper for extra precaution. Glasses are a different case entirely. Wrap each glass individually with packing paper and place an extra piece of crumpled paper inside the open area. Don’t scrimp on the packing paper and as always, place the heaviest items on the bottom!

When it comes to specialty items including breakable antiques and odd-shaped items, wrap in bubble wrap, but then sandwich the item between two sturdy pieces of cardboard. Tape, tape, tape … when in doubt, put some more tape. This capsule can then be placed in a durable box and nestled with packing paper. Make sure that no protruding pieces are at risk by keeping the item snug and stable.

Quincy Storage & Transfer provides powerful packing services, so if you are looking to move your whole house, a single room, or a single piece of furniture, we have the resources to make sure your goods get there in one piece.
